Huntsville, Ala. -- The Lady Hawks went 1-2 against the 9th ranked UAH Chargers this weekend. Splitting the doubleheader Saturday, falling in game one 3-1 before winning game two 5-4. On Sunday, UAH earned the series win with a 3-1 victory.
Shorter (13-5, 6-5 GSC) fell behind in the first game on Saturday in the first inning as the Chargers put two on the board on a homerun from Kaitlyn Bannister. In the fifth, the Lady Hawks cut the lead in half as
Niki Cook scored on a single from
Maggie Meacham for Shorter's only run of the game. Bannister delivered a second 2-run homer in the sixth for the 4-1 final score.
Amanda Blanchard recorded the loss for the Lady Hawks – her first of the season – allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, Shorter took the lead 1-0 in the second as
Paige Rowland homered to center field, and added to the lead in the third on a 2 RBI double from
Ericka Bynum. In the bottom of the third, Bannister singled for UAH (13-5, 8-2 GSC) to make it a 3-1 game.
Kendall Johnson reached on a fielder's choice in the fourth to plate Rowland to bring the Lady Hawks advantage to 4-1.
The Chargers then added a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to cut the lead to one, but Shorter answered in the seventh with a homerun from
Kori Benson to make it a 5-4 game. Michal Robertson's solo homer in the bottom of the seventh rounded out the scoring for UAH.
Maddie Bray recorded the win for the Lady Hawks; allowing three runs on ten hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work.
Shorter jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning of game three on a single from Meacham. UAH answered in the fourth to tie the game on an error, and then took the lead and the win with two runs in the sixth for the 3-1 final score.
Bray took the loss for Shorter; turning in three innings in relief, allowing three runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
The Lady Hawks will remain on the road next week as they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on Armstrong State in a doubleheader Tuesday and then to St. Augustine, Fla. for a doubleheader with Flagler on Wednesday. Before returning home for a three game Gulf South Conference series with West Georgia Saturday and Sunday, March 14-15.
