Softball splits with Armstrong State

Savannah, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks split the non-conference doubleheader at Armstrong State Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 13-2, and falling in the second 14-6.

Shorter moves to 14-6 on the season; while the Pirates go to 11-7.

Kori Benson got things going for the Lady Hawks in the first inning with an RBI double to plate Maggie Meacham. In the third, Meacham made it a 2-0 game with a homer to center field. Shorter brought its lead to 4-0 in the fourth as Niki Cook delivered an RBI single and Kendall Johnson brought in Janell Echols after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Armstrong's only runs of the game came in the bottom of the fourth as Jane Trzaska delivered a 2-run homer to left field.

Echols walked in the fifth with the bases loaded to bring in Paige Rowland to give the Lady Hawks a 6-2 advantage. Shorter then put the game away in the seventh with seven runs. Carson Carriker started off the scoring with an RBI single to plate Tori Etheridge. Cook brought in Taylor Ann Oda as she reached on an error later in the inning, and scored on a 2 RBI single from Kendall Johnson. Kameron Carter then delivered a 3-run homer to center field for the 13-2 final score.

Kalei Kimbrell earned the win for the Lady Hawks; pitching four innings in relief, allowing no runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

Shorter took the lead 2-0 in the first inning of game two as Carter singled to plate Cook and Meacham. In the bottom of the inning, however, Armstrong answered with four runs to take the lead. The Lady Hawks tied things back up in the second on a 2 RBI double from Meacham, only to see the Pirates regain the lead in the bottom of the inning on a homerun from Alexis Mercer.

Mercer delivered her second homer in as many at bats in the third inning to give Armstrong an 8-4 lead, and Rachel Reynolds added an RBI single to make it a 9-4 game.

Johnson singled in the fourth to bring in Cook to cut the lead to 9-5; Rowland then homered in the fifth, making it a 9-6 game. In the bottom of the inning the Pirates pulled away on a grand slam from Lindsay Stewart and Sierra Newman added an RBI single in the sixth for the 14-6 final score.

Maddie Bray took the loss for Shorter; allowing six runs on seven hits through one inning of work.

Cook, Bynum, and Meacham all recorded four hits on the day; while Johnson, Benson, and Rowland added three hits each.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action Wednesday, March 11, as they continue the non-conference road trip at Flagler College. Game times are set for 4:00pm and 6:30pm in St. Augustine, Fla.
