Softball sweeps Lander

Greenwood, S.C. -- The Lady Hawks swept Lander University Wednesday evening in a non-conference midweek matchup to give head coach Al Thomas his 200th win at Shorter. Game scores were 3-2 and 8-0, respectively.

The first game needed extra innings, but the Lady Hawks pulled out the win in the top of the eighth as Ericka Bynum scored on a fielder's choice.

Bynum put Shorter on the board in the first inning as she drove in Maggie Meacham on a ground out to the shortstop, and the Lady Hawks added to their lead in the fourth as Kameron Carter delivered her first homer of the day to make it a 2-0 game. In the fifth, however, Lander tied things up and force extra innings on a 2-run homerun from Melanie Davis.

Maddie Bray earned the win for Shorter, tallying a complete game performance. In eight innings of work she allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

In game two, the Lady Hawks used a seven run third inning to put the game away. Niki Cook led off with a walk, followed by a single from Meacham; Paige Rowland was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Carter then did the damage with her second homer of the night, a grand slam to left field to clear the bases and make it a 4-0 game. Later in the inning with Tori Etheridge and Janell Echols on base, Kendall Johnson cleared the left field wall to bring Shorter's advantage to 7-0.

The Lady Hawks added a run in the sixth to earn the win 8-0.

Amanda Blanchard recorded the win for Shorter to improve to 6-0 on the season; turning in a complete game, one hit shutout. Through six innings of work she struck out six.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action Saturday and Sunday – March 6-7 – as they travel to No. 9 Alabama Huntsville for a three game Gulf South Conference series. Games are set to begin at 2:00pm eastern both days.
