Hawks sweep Choctaws in grand fashion

Clinton, Miss. -- The Hawks took the first two games at Mississippi College Saturday afternoon; winning the opener 13-9, and taking the finale 8-0.

Shorter improves to 13-11 on the year and 9-8 in the Gulf South Conference; while the Choctaws fall to 9-19 overall and 2-16 in the GSC.

Mississippi College took the lead early, scoring twice in the second and again in the fourth to make it a 3-0 game. But, the Hawks got the bats going in the fifth; scoring seven runs on four hits. Taylor Cato started things off as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Ian Redetzky. George Ragsdale followed with a 2 RBI single to third to bring in Dylan Riner and Tyler Trenary. Zach Santos was then walked to load the bases once again, and set the stage for the first grand slam of the day for Bryan Mathews.

The Choctaws fought back, scoring twice in the fifth before taking the lead 9-7 with four runs on four hits. Only to have the Hawks answer with six runs in the top of the ninth to earn the win. After the first two batters were retired in order, Shorter tallied five hits. Dustin Lawson, Redetzky and Trenary recorded consecutive singles to bring in the first run. Brian Cabrera was then hit by a pitch, and Riner followed with an RBI single to bring in Redetzky. With the bases loaded, Patrick Sanderson was hit to bring in Trenary to give Shorter the lead 10-9. Cabrera then came in on a balk, and Ragsdale delivered a 2 RBI single to make it a 13-9 game and round out the scoring for the Hawks.

Christian Champion recorded the win for Shorter to move to 2-1 on the year; despite allowing four runs on four hits with two walks during one inning of work.

In game two the Hawks jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Ragsdale notched his first homer of the year and the second grand slam of the day for Shorter. Cabrera made it a 5-0 game in the fourth with an RBI single, and Santos delivered a 3-run homer in the seventh for the 8-0 final score.
