Due West, S.C. --Â The Lady Hawks needed overtime, but when it was all said and done they came out on top 16-14 at Erskine Tuesday afternoon.
Shorter improves to 4-5 on the year with the win; while the Flying Fleet fall to 2-6 overall.
Erskine got things going first; scoring at the 27:38 mark. Only to have
Mia Wiggins net her first goal of the game three minutes later to tie things up. The Fly Fleet then tallied four consecutive goals to take a 5-1 lead with 11:29 to play. With 10:05 on the clock,
Crystal Marshall found the back of the net for Shorter to cut into the lead, but Erskine answered minutes later to keep the advantage. Marshall and
Bethany Fevella then went back to back to make it a 6-4 game. The Flying Fleet added a goal with 1:07 to play; Wiggins answered seconds later for the Lady Hawks to take a 7-5 game into the intermission.
Erskine opened the second half with two goals, to extend their lead to 9-5. But, Shorter followed with two of their own to cut the lead to two. The teams traded goals over the next five minutes, but the Lady Hawks made it a one point game with back-to-back goals from
Shelby Beverly and
Clarissa Rutherford with 7:59 to go. And, after going back and forth for the next four minutes, Shorter tallied three straight goals to take a 14-13 lead with 1:36 remaining – goals came from
Kari Chambers, Marshall and Wiggins. The Flying Fleet force overtime with their final goal of the evening with eighteen second on the clock.
In the first overtime period, Beverly converted two free position shots to give Shorter the lead and the win, 16-14.
Nicole Kube played the complete game in goal for Shorter; making 7 saves through 68:00 minutes.
In total, the Lady Hawks outshot Erskine 34-28 and held a 29-21 advantage in shots on goal. Shorter added 32 ground balls on the day; while also winning 16 draws.
Shorter will be back in action April 7 as Coker College visits Ben Brady Field for a 7:00pm start.
