Hawks top Reinhardt, 11-9

Waleska, Ga. -- The Hawks earned their second win of the season Monday afternoon, topping Reinhardt 11-9.

Shorter moves to 2-3 overall; while the Eagles were handed their first loss of the year and move to 6-1.

Ben Janes got things going for the Hawks in the opening quarter, tallying the first goal of the day with 12:53 on clock. Reinhardt answered three minutes later to tie things up, only to see Shorter regain the lead on a goal from Tyler Kristiansen at the 6:33 mark. Jarrad Hines made it a 2-2 game with 4:27 remaining, with a goal for the Eagles.

Reinhardt took the lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter on a goal from Dennis Bell. But, Shorter was right there again, tying the game on a goal from Scott Dangel at the 8:00 mark. Jeff Mathis scored with 6:21 to play to give the Eagles the lead, but Shorter once again tied things up; this time as Alex Malinowski found the back of the net. Mathis closed out the frame with two goals in the final minute to give Reinhardt the 6-4 advantage going into halftime.

The Hawks kicked into gear in the third quarter, netting four goals; while holding the Eagles to one to go up 8-7.  Four different players scored goals in the frame for Shorter – Zachery Dirkse, Malinowski, Jordan Getz, and Janes.

In the final quarter, the Hawks tallied three goals and held Reinhardt to a pair to earn the win 11-9. Getz added two goals – for a total of three in the game, to lead Shorter. And, James VandenBrink netted his second of the season.

JR WIllers made 11 saves on the day for the Hawks on 20 shots faced.

In total Shorter outshot the Eagles 38-34, and 23-20 in shots on goal. While Reinhardt held the advantage 29-25 in ground balls, and won 16 of the 24 face-offs.

The Hawks will be back in action March 6 as they travel to Tampa, Fla. to take on St. Leo. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
