Lady Hawks sweep West Georgia

ROME  -- The Lady Hawks swept West Georgia in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon. Game scores were 4-0 and 6-4, respectively.

Shorter improves to 18-6 on the season and 8-5 in conference play; while the Wolves fall to 12-14 on the year and 5-9 in the GSC.

Kendall Johnson got things going for the Lady Hawks in game one; bringing in Niki Cook on a ground out to second base. In the third, Shorter added to its advantage as Kameron Carter delivered an RBI single to plate Maggie Meacham. Johnson and Carter both connected on solo homeruns in the fifth for the 4-0 final score.

In game two, West Georgia jumped out to the early lead; plating three runs in the second inning. The Lady Hawks answered, however, in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Paige Rowland started off the scoring as she came in on a bases loaded walk to Carson Carriker. Janell Echols then scored on a sacrifice fly from Meacham, and Cook came in on an RBI single from Johnson.

The Wolves regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single from Randi Phillips, but the Lady Hawks were back at it again in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good as Johnson notched her second homerun of the day; this time a three run shot to center field to give Shorter the win 6-4.

Amanda Blanchard earned the win in both games; bringing her season record to 10-1. In game one she pitched a complete game shut out; allowing no runs on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. In game two she came on in relief of Kalei Kimbrell; allowing no runs on one hit with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Kimbrell pitched 3.1 innings to start game two; allowing four runs – one earned – on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Shorter will return to action Monday afternoon in the series finale with West Georgia at Alto Park beginning at 3:00pm.
