ROME --Â The Lady Hawks came from behind Wednesday evening to top Ursuline 14-13 at Ben Brady Field.
Shorter improves to 2-3 on the season; while the Arrows fall to 0-2 overall.
Ursuline got on the board first; scoring twice in the opening minutes to take a 2-0 lead. The Lady Hawks answered as
Ashley Nuqui found the back of the net on a pass from
Kari Chambers at the 25:46 mark. The Arrows answered less than a minute later to maintain the lead; only to have
Shelby Beverly and
Alex Abbey go back-to-back to cut the advantage to one over the next two minutes.
Over the final half of the frame the teams traded goals as the Arrows scored four times, to the Lady Hawks three – Beverly,
Devin Spero, and
Mia Wiggins each score – to take a 7-6 lead into the break.
Ursuline added to its lead in the opening minutes of the frame with three consecutive goals. Shorter answered, however, with three of their own to keep the pressure. With 12:36 to play Celeste Friel scored for Ursuline to bring their advantage to 11-9, but again the Lady Hawks answered as Wiggins found the back of the net at the 11:21 mark to keep it a one point game.
The Arrows scored twice more in the frame to take the lead 13-10, Shorter then closed out the frame with four unanswered scores to earn the win 14-13. Beverly got things going with 8:11 to play as she netted a pass from Wiggins.
Erin Wynn and Spero followed with their second goals of the game at 6:48 and 5:53, respectively, to tie the game. Playing a man-up, the Lady Hawks used the advantage to take the lead as Chrystal Marshall found the back of the net on a pass from Beverly for the 14-13 final score.
Beverly led the Lady Hawks with five goals and two assists on the day; while Spero, Wiggins, and Wynn each netted two goals each. Wiggins also added two assists.
Ursuline outshot Shorter 30-21 and won 17 of 28 draws. While the Lady Hawks held the advantage 27-22 in ground ball pickups.
Nicole Kube made eight saves in the game for Shorter.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action Saturday afternoon as Reinhardt visits Ben Brady Field for a 6:00pm start.
