Cleveland, Tenn. -- The Lady Hawks closed out the regular season Saturday evening, falling to longtime rival Lee University 64-61.
Shorter (12-16, 8-14 GSC) took the lead early in the game on a 15-2 run to jump out to a 20-9 lead midway through the opening frame. From there, the Lady Flames began chipping away and despite trailing 35-27 at the break didn't let up. Lee (18-8, 14-8 GSC) opened the second half on a 10-2 run to tie the game, 37-37, with 17:25 to play.
Through the final minutes of the game the teams traded baskets and with less than a minute to play Lee tied the game 61-61 on free throws. Despite a couple of chances, the Lady Hawks couldn't net the go ahead as both Ieshia Aelxander and
Tamarr Williams saw shots miss; only to see Shleby Brown deliver the game winner for the Lady Flames on a three-pointer with 0:06 to play.
Alexander led Shorter with a game high 25 points, while Williams and
Jackie Hudson each added 10.
The Lady Hawks will now turn their attention to post season play as they travel to West Florida Tuesday, March 3, for the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
