Hawks fall to Lee in overtime

Cleveland, Tenn. -- The Hawks closed out the regular season Saturday night, falling to longtime rival Lee University, 98-92, in overtime.

It was a back-and-forth game that saw a tied score 11 times, and the lead change 6 with neither team able to put together a measurable run to go ahead. Shorter (18-10, 13-9 GSC) saw its largest lead of the night as Jordan Jacks netted a jumper to put the Hawks up 30-24 with 6:59 to play in the first half, only to see Lee (16-12, 10-12 GSC) erase the advantage and go ahead moments later. Dedric Ware, however, delivered a 3-pointer with just over a minute to play to put Shorter back ahead, 41-40 at the break.

The Flames opened the second half with an 18-4 run to regain the advantage, but the Hawks began chipping away and pulled to within in two on multiple occasions. Cole Birchfield then netted a jumper at the buzzer to send then game to overtime, tied 82-82.

It was all Lee in the overtime period, as they took the lead in opening seconds and never trailed, despite the Hawks putting on the pressure. The Flames began pulling away in the final two minutes as they used an 8-3 run to close of the frame and the win.

Ware led all scorers with 27 points in the game; while Jacks posted his 13th double-double of the year with 18 points, 11 rebounds. And, both Kordario Fleming and Chris Daniels added 14 points. Tyler Alderman just missed double-figures with 9 pointsin the game.

Shorter will now turn its attention to post season as Union visits the Winthrop-King Centre on Tuesday, March 3, for the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
