Lady Hawks win 2 on second day of Eckerd Invitational

Clearwater, Fla. -- The Lady Hawks stayed perfect Saturday afternoon, turning in two more wins at the Eckerd Spring Invitational. First topping Palm Beach Atlantic 8-2, then defeating Nova Southeastern 8-7.

In game one, Ericka Bynum put Shorter on the board with an RBI double to plate Niki Cook in the first inning, and then came around to score a single from Paige Rowland two batters later to take a 2-0 lead. Cook delivered an RBI single in the second to extend the lead, and then scored on a single from Maggie Meacham to make it a 4-0 game.

In the fourth the Lady Hawks broke the game wide open with four runs. Meacham started things off with an RBI triple, and score on a ground out from Bynum. Then Janell Echols turned in her first RBI's of the season a 2-run single to plate Kameron Carter and Taylor Ann Oda.

In the bottom of the inning, the Sailfish answered, scoring twice to break the shutout.

Maddie Bray posted her second win in an as many starts; allowing two runs on eight hits with one strikeout. Amanda Blanchard came on in relief to record her first save of the season; pitching three innings of one hit ball, with five strikeouts.

Nova Southeastern started things off in game two, with two runs in the first inning. Shorter, however, answered in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-2 lead. Cook led off the inning with a single and stole second, before coming in to score on an RBI double from Meacham. Bynum followed with an RBI single to plate Meacham, and Tori Etheridge plated both on a 2 RBI single later in the inning. Kendall Johnson got in on the RBI count with 2 on a single up the middle to round of the scoring in the inning.

The Sharks cut the lead to 6-5 with two runs in the second and one in third. Carter scored for the Lady Hawks in the bottom of the third to give the Lady Hawks a 7-5 advantage. And, in the fourth both teams added a run to bring the score to 8-6. Katrina Ammons recorded her second homer of the game in the seventh for the 8-7 final score.

Kalei Kimbrell earned her first win of the year for the Lady Hawks; pitching 2.1 innings, while allowing five runs – two earned – on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts. In relief, Blanchard pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a walk.
