Clearwater, Fla. -- The Lady Hawks opened the 2015 season with two wins on the first day of the Eckerd Spring Invitational; topping Saint Leo, 3-0, and Barry, 6-2.
In game one
Ericka Bynum picked up just where she left off last season, tallying all three RBI in the game. She put Shorter on the board in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to left to plate
Niki Cook; who led off the game with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a single from
Maggie Meacham.
Leading 1-0 going into the fifth, the Lady Hawks extended their lead to 3-0 as Bynum doubled to bring in
Kendall Johnson and Cook. Johnson led off the inning with a single and Cook reached on a fielding error.
Maddie Bray earned her first win of the season with a complete game, shutout performance. In seven innings of work she allowed five hits, a walk, and struck out four. Ashley Ehlers suffered the loss for Saint Leo to move to 1-1 on the season; allowing three runs on six hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
In game two
Kameron Carter got things going for the Lady Hawks in the first inning notching the first homerun of the season; a three-run shot to left field that plated Meacham and
Paige Rowland to give Shorter a 3-0 lead. In the third, Bynum lead off the inning with a single and came in to score on a single from Rowland; who then scored on a fly out from
Tori Etheridge to make it a 5-0 game. And, in the fifth
Abi Valdes delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Carter to bring the Lady Hawks advantage to 6-0.
Barry broke the shut out in the sixth with two runs.
Amanda Blanchard, making her first start as a Lady Hawk, recorded the win; pitching the complete game, while allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits with six strikeouts. Haley Wiseman tallied the loss; allowing six runs – all earned – on eight hits with six strikeouts and four walks.
Shorter will be back in action Saturday when they take on Palm Beach Atlantic and Nova Southeastern at 11:00am and 1:30pm, respectively.
