Montgomery, Ala. -- The Lady Hawks swept Christian Brothers in Gulf South Conference softball Friday afternoon; winning the opener 8-0 in six innings and taking the finale 17-0 in five innings.
Shorter improves to 8-2 on the season and 3-2 in conference play with the wins. While the Lady Bucs move to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in the GSC.
The Lady Hawks opened game one with a run in the first inning as
Niki Cook scored on a ground out from
Ericka Bynum.
Paige Rowland singled in the third to plate
Kameron Carter and
Maggie Meacham, and then came in to score later in the inning on an error by the shortstop.
Both, Bynum and Rowland delivered their first homers of the season in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively, to make it a 7-0 game. Carter closed out the scoring for Shorter in the sixth with an RBI single for the 8-0 final score.
Amanda Blanchard tallied her fourth win of the season and her first career no-hitter with a six inning, five strikeout performance.
Shorter jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two as Bynum plated Cook on an RBI single, followed by an RBI double from Carter, a bases loaded walk from
Maddie Bray, and an RBI single from
Carson Carriker.
The Lady Hawks added to their advantage with a run in the second as Rowland scored on an error by the second baseman, and then used a 12-run third inning to put the game away.
Bray earned the win for Shorter in game two; allowing no runs on five hits with six strikeouts through five innings of work.
In total the Lady Hawks pounded out 29 hits on the day – 12 in the opener and 17 in the finale. Rowland led Shorter with 5 hits on the day with 4 RBI and 5 runs scored, while Bynum added 4 hits and 5 RBI.
The Lady Hawks will close out the three game series with Christian Brothers with a single game Saturday, February 21. Game time is set for 2:00pm eastern.
