ROME, Ga. – The Shorter Hawks saw six players score in double figures as they closed out the 2015 portion of their schedule with a 106-93 non-conference win over Carver College Tuesday night at the Winthrop-King Centre.
The victory in Shorter's final non-Gulf South Conference clash of the year evens the Hawks to 6-6 overall heading into the new year when they resume their GSC campaign visiting West Alabama on Saturday night.
Phil Taylor headed up the Hawks' scoring assault ending the night with 29 points hitting 7 of 14 shots from the floor – he was 3 of 6 from beyond the three-point arc – and canned 12 of 16 free throws as Shorter turned in one of its best shooting outputs of the season connecting on 53 percent of its shots and converted 46 percent of its three-point attempts.
Finding the range from three-point land was
Cole Birchfield, who came off the bench to end the game with 19 points, hitting 5 of 7 treys.
Chris Daniels added 15 points and pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds,
Trevor McDade and
Alijah Bennett each had 13 and
Amonte Potter finished with 12.
Against Carver's Cougars (8-16), Shorter never trailed as the Hawks set the tone early breaking out to a 54-39 halftime lead.
The Hawks continued to cruise at the start of the second half, taking its biggest lead of the night, 77-57, when hit a three-pointer with 11:4 left to play.
Carver, however, refused to go quietly as the Cougars fought their way back to make it a nine-point game, 98-89, when Saveyon Edwards connected on a three with 2:24 remaining, but that was a close as the visitors would get.
Edwards led all scorers with 32 points while Jamil Saaka had 23.
After taking on West Alabama in Livingston, Ala., on Saturday, the Hawks remain on the road next Monday heading to Carrollton for a GSC showdown against West Georgia, then return to Rome to for a pair of conference tilts against Mississippi College on Jan. 9 and Delta State on Jan. 11.
