ROME -- The Hawks earned their first Gulf South Conference win of the season, topping West Florida 88-68, at home Monday night.
Shorter improves to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the GSC; while the Argos fall to 2-5 on the year and 1-3 in conference play.
After trading the lead through the first ten minutes of the half, the Hawks took the lead for good on a jumper from
Chris Daniels with 7:51 to go in the opening frame and didn't look back. Adding to their lead in the second half, Shorter led by as many as 22 late; holding on for the win 88-68. The win puts the Hawks back into the win column after having dropped their last four games.
The Hawks shot 56 percent on the night, making 19-29 from field goal range. While holding the Argos to 46 percent shooting. Shorter also held a 34-24 advantage in rebounds, and made the most of West Florida's mistakes, tallying 23 points off turnovers.
Phil Taylor led the with game high 21 points, and was joined in double figures by
Amonte Potter (16),
Trevor McDade (13),
Cole Birchfield (11), and
Alijah Bennett (10). Daniels just missed double figures with nine points on the day, while also turning in a team high eight rebounds.
Shorter will return to action Thursday when they travel to Alabama Huntsville for a 7:30pm eastern start.
