Cleveland, Tenn. --Â The Hawks will host its GSC Tournament Quarterfinal match, thanks to a 2-1 overtime win at No. 12 Lee University Friday afternoon.
The Flames (11-4-2, 6-2-1 GSC) got things going early in the game, scoring off the rebound of a saved penalty kick in the 15th minute to end
Austen Trevers' scoreless streak at 315:45. And, despite chances on both sides were able to keep the 1-0 advantage until the final minutes.
The Hawks (7-8-2, 5-3-1 GSC), however, were persistent and in the end where able to spoil Lee's chances to receive the opening round bye in the GSC Tournament when
Josh Addinal headed in a cross from
Christopher Cummins to tie the game with 2:50 to play and send the game to overtime. In the extra time, both teams had chances, but the Hawks found the go ahead when
Charlie Dennis netted a ball from the top of the box just out of the reach of Lee's keeper to give Shorter the win.
In total, the Flames held a slight advantage in the shots 13-12, while both teams placed five on goal. Trevers played the complete game in goal for Shorter, making four saves.
The Hawks will now turn their attention to postseason play, and will serve as host for one of the two quarterfinal matches of the GSC Tournament when Christian Brothers returns to Ben Brady Field for the second time this year. In the first meeting, on October 25, the teams settled for a scoreless tie. Tuesday's winner will take on top-seeded West Alabama in the semifinals, hosted by the Tigers in Livingston, Ala.
