No. 9 Hawks finish 3-0 at Coker Duals

Hartsville, S.C. -- The Hawks finished a perfect 3-0 Friday at the Coker Duals in Hartsville, S.C.; topping King 48-6, Belmont Abbey 32-14, and Limestone 29-12.

With the three wins the ninth-ranked Hawks now boast a 7-4 record in dual matches this season.

Against King, Shorter jumped out a commanding lead; winning the first 8 matches – the first three via forfeit – to put the match away. The Tornado's only win in the dual came at 197 as Eldon Valery topped Kimani Nasrullah on a fall in 4:25.

Belmont Abbey put up a fight in the second dual of the day taking a 4-0 lead to start as Patrick Mestraz defeated Steven Crosanti via major decision 9-1 at 125. The Hawks, however, fought back to take the lead 7-4 as Ben Smith and Colby Rinehart won at 133 and 141, respectively. Only to see the Crusaders regain the lead, 14-7, after winning the next two fights. Wally Figaro gave Shorter a one point advantage at 165, defeating John Glunt (TF 17-2) to begin the Hawks final push for the victory as they wrapped up the win by taking the final five matchups.

In the final dual of the day, Shorter again took the lead early. First winning at 125 via forfeit, then Jalaal Malik defeated Kyle Lowe 8-3, and Rinehart topped Terrence Dugay 6-4 to give the Hawks a 12-0 advantage. The Saints then cut the lead the lead in half, winning the next two weight classes. But, Shorter added to its advantage at 165 as Figaro earned the first fall of the dual in 6:27 over Jimmy Sandlin, Dalton Lane followed with a 10-2 major decision over Matthew Ostermiller, and Terrence Smith earned the win at 184 (TB-1 9-5) over Caleb Rivera to give the Hawks the lead, 25-6. Jacob Allen scored the final points for Limestone; topping Nasrullah on a fall in 0:28 at 185. Andrew Ewers then closed out the win for Shorter by defeating Cody Vandeline in a 16-6 major decision at 285.

The Hawks will be back in action January 17-18 as they travel to Lancaster, Penn. for the Diplomat Duals and the Shorty Hitchcock Open.
