Jackson, Tenn. --Â Entering the game as two of the six teams vying for the top spot in the Gulf South Conference standings, the Hawks came out ahead 84-63 over Union on the road Saturday afternoon.
Shorter improves to 14-5 on the season and 9-4 in the GSC; while the Bulldogs, also 14-5 overall, slip to 8-5 in conference play.
The Hawks pulled away in the first half on a 11-0 run capped off by a jumper from
Jordan Jacks to take a 27-16 lead with 10:09 to go in the frame. Down the stretch, Union cut the lead to as little as 3, but couldn't push ahead as Shorter went on to take a 39-30 lead into the break.
In the second half the Hawks added to their advantage, and led by as many as 21 in the period.
Shorter shot 52.2% in the game and 33.3% from 3-point range, while holding the Bulldogs to 33.3% shooting and 20% from beyond the arc.
The Hawks were paced by Jacks and
Travis Jones; who each tallied 22 points in the contest.
Dedric Ware added 19, and
Kordario Fleming turned in 14 points off the bench. Jacks also posted his 10th double-double of the year with 16 rebounds.
Anshanti Day led Union with 14 points; while Corieon Pearson, Marterrace Brock and Jordan Montgomery all recorded 12.
Shorter will return to action Thursday, January 29, as Valdosta State visits the Winthrop-King Centre for an 8:00pm tip. Â
