Valdosta, Ga. --Â The Hawks needed overtime to do it, but in the end they handed Valdosta its first home loss of the season; topping the Blazers 98-94 Monday evening.
Shorter moves to 7-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference play with the win; while Valdosta goes to 6-4 overall and 1-3 in the Gulf South Conference.
The Hawks took the lead early in the game, and led by as many as 13 in the opening frame. But, the Blazers came back in the second half to take the lead 62-61 as Colin Cook netted a jumper with 9:58 to play. Valdosta pulled away, but the Hawks had other plans and began chipping away; using a 15-5 late to regain the lead, 80-78, on a 3-pointer from
Trevor McDade with 2:23 to go. The Blazers then used a 7-5 run to tie the game 85-85 as time expired.
With 3:06 to play in the overtime period,
Joseph Bobbitt hit a jumper to give the Shorter the lead for good, as the Hawks outscored Valdosta 13-9 in the final frame to earn the win 98-94.
Shorter was led by
Jordan Jacks; who turned in his 5th double-double of the season with 22 points, 13 rebounds.
Chris Daniels, despite fouling out the game, just missed a double-double of his own; tallying 14 points and 9 rebounds. McDade added a season high 19 points for the Hawks, and
Travis Jones chipped in with 11.
Dedric Ware just missed double figures, posting 9 points in the game.
The Blazers finished with six players in double figures with Cook leading the charge with 21 points.
Shorter will return to action Thursday when Alabama Huntsville visits the Winthrop-King Centre for an 8:00pm tip, before North Alabama closes out the 2014 portion of the Hawks season Saturday at 4:00pm.
