Lady Hawks fall in season opener, 2-1

Young Harris, Ga.—Women's Soccer fell to Young Harris, 2-1, in overtime Thursday evening to begin the season.

The game remained scoreless until the 35:21 mark in the first period, when Helena Farinha found the back of the net to put the Lady Hawks on the board, 1-0. Shorter held onto that lead for the remainder of the half, to maintain the advantage going into the intermission.

Young Harris fought back to tie the game in the 74th minute, as Whitney Thomas scored the Mountain Lions first goal on a feed from Candace Edwards. Shorter was unable to break through despite making four shots on goal in the final 20 minutes of regulaton; sending the game to an overtime period.

In overtime, Edwards netted the deciding goal, at 98:50, to give Young Harris the victory, 2-1.

The Lady Hawks outshot the Mountain Lions 26-12. Shorter's offense was led by Farinha and Aline Tamiosso; who combined for 20 of the shots made—Farinha with 8 and Tamiosso with 12.

In goal, Taylor Hays played all 98.50 minutes for Shorter, recording 5 saves on 12. For Young Harris, Taylor Erickson worked the complete game; recording 9 saves.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action on Sunday, September 8, as they travel to Spartenburg, S.C. to face Converse College. Game time is set for 6pm.
