ROME--In their first game of the season women's basketball defeated the Falcons of Montevallo, 65-62.
The Lady Hawks got on the board first as
Lynette Harris and
Ieshia Alexander netted layups to give the Shorter the 4-0 advantage. Montevallo's Shay Bonner then connected on back to back shots to take the lead 5-4; a lead they wouldn't give up until 12:37 to play in the second half as
Madison Rice delivered a three-pointer that swung the advantage in Shorter's favor, 40-37.
Montevallo fought back, but couldn't pull ahead, despite tying the game on a few occasions.
Alexander led the Lady Hawks with 20 points in the game, while
Karisma Boykin chipped in with 11. For Montevallo, three players reached double-digits in points, with Taylor Beverly recording a game high 24.
Shorter's bench made the most of its opportunities as the Lady Hawks reserves posted 16 points in the contest.
From the line, Shorter shot 53%. Montevallo, on the other hand, turned in a 23-32 mark in free throws.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action Monday evening, November 18, as Columbus State visits the Winthrop-King Centre for a 7:30 tip.
