Rochelle Black begins his sixth year with the track & field and cross country programs at Shorter University. His primary focus will be with the Hawk sprinters, a unit that has proven very successful during his tenure. Black also serves as the program's recruiting coordinator.
In his time on the hill, Black has had several notable accomplishments:
- Over 15 conference champions
- Over 40 national qualifiers
- Over 25 All-American recipients
- 5 National Champions
In Shorter’s first year in the Peach Belt Conference, Coach Black saw that his student-athletes were capable of competing at a higher level, as several individuals claimed All-Conference accolades. On the national level, they continued to rise to the occasion, as his unit ended the season with over 10 All-American awards.
A Virginia Beach, Va. native, Black obtained a Bachelor of Science in Exercise, Sport, and Health Education from Radford University in May 2005. While at Radford, he was a member of the track and field team, specializing in the high jump and 400 meter hurdles. A multiple All-Conference selection, Black also was a Big South Conference Champion in the high jump and named the 2003 Indoor Conference Championships' Most Outstanding Field Event Performer after jumping a school and then conference record of 6 feet 11 inches.
After graduation, Black began a two-year graduate assistantship at Troy University in Alabama. There, he worked with sprints, jumps, and multi-events. Over those two years, he assisted in the training of 20 athletes that competed at the NCAA Regional Championships.
Black is a USA Track and Field Level 1 certified coach and obtained his level 2 certification in the sprints, hurdles, and relays in the summer of 2010. In 2012, he was selected as a participant of the USA Track & Field Emerging Elite Coaches Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California.
