Martin Hernandez

Martin Hernandez begins his second year with the track & field and cross country program at Shorter University. Hernandez moved up the ranks over the years, coming from an All-American student-athlete on the hill, to now serving as the head coach of the cross country and distance program.

In his first full season, Hernandez was responsible for the great success the harriers of Shorter University amassed. Shea Spicher and Daniel Sorenson both finished as the winners of the Gulf South Conference Cross Country Championships. Because Shorter is not eligible for conference accolades, they settled for the title of “unofficial” winner. Spicher did, however, gain recognition under Hernandez as the first distance national since Justyna Mudy when she won the 3,000m run at the NCCAA Indoor National Championships.

Hernandez competed for the Hawks for two years, garnering All-American honors in both the 5k and marathon. His time in the marathon still stands as a school record, and since Shorter has moved onto NCAA division 2, will likely stand permanently.

Hernandez, a California native, graduated from Shorter in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business administration, and most recently earned his MBA from Shorter as well.
