ROME- The Shorter Women's Lacrosse team earned a hard-fought 20-14 win Saturday afternoon against Lees-McRae. The win improves the Hawks to 3-9 and moves them to 3-2 in conference play.
The opening frame was a back-and-forth affair between both sides, as
Kaitlyn Dwyer-Peppers got Shorter on the board first. The visitors responded with a goal that would quickly be answered with one from
Cassidy Jones to regain the lead. The Hawks tacked in another goal from Peppers before the Bobcats evened it up with back-to-back goals.
Maggie Wallace helped give the Hawks the 4-3 lead late in the period with a goal to swing the momentum in Shorter's direction.
Shorter's offense took off in the second quarter, outscoring Lees-McRae 7-1 with another balanced attack from Jones and Peppers, who scored six of the Hawks' seven, with the other one coming from
Shyla Araujo. The Hawks entered halftime with a commanding 11-4 lead.
The second half proved to be much of the same, with physical play being the theme as multiple cards were drawn by both sides. The Bobcats managed to cut the deficit with a handful of goals, but could not contain
Cassidy Jones, who netted a career-best eight goals to deliver the Hawks the 20-14 win.
