ROME,Ga—The Lady Hawks came out ready to fight against the Mountain Lions of Young Harris in a non-conference midweek matchup. Shorter took both games from the #5 Young Harris with a final score of 6-4 and 6-5 for the second game.
Kaylee George hit the walkoff single in the second game for another Hawk win.
With the two wins the Hawks will now improve to 4-5 overall while the Mountain Lions will fall to 8-3.
Game 1
Shorter came out ready to go by scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the first from a double from
Taylor Phillips to score
Hannah Morales. Then
Kiera Dudley singled to left field to score
Carlee Graham. Next up Phillips stole home to take the lead 3-0 in the bottom of the first. Young Harris made a pitching change in the bottom of the 2
nd which lead the Hawks to have a hitless inning.
In the bottom of the third the Hawks scored one run on a single from
Angela Cecere which scored Dudley to keep the lead 4-0. Shorter had a three -up-three-down inning in the top of the fourth with a double play to end the inning. The bats started to get hot again in the bottom of the fourth with
Sydney Poston leading off the inning with a single to right field, followed by a walk for Graham and then Phillips came in clutch with a double to right field to score Poston. Dudley hit a rope to left field to score
Kaylee George with a score of 6-0. Another Mountain Lions pitching change shut the Hawks down for the rest of the game.
Young Harris started to rally in the top of the sixth when Hawks pitcher
Madison Pettigrew started to give out walks. The Mountain Lions scored three runs to close the gap to 6-3 with a single from Emily Harris. Into the bottom of the sixth, Young Harris had a three-up-three-down inning to go into the seventh inning and try and score some runs. The Mountain Lions chipped away at the plate with Karah Straub starting off the inning with a single from a bunt the Harris grounded out into a double play. Pitcher Jackie O'Reilley made it interesting with three walks in a row on two outs. Although, Ashley Autuori flied out to Dudley in left field to end the game with a Hawk Win.
Batting leaders for the Hawks include Phillips who went 2-3 with two doubles, two RBIs, a walk and a stolen base. Dudley went 2-3 with two RBIs and a walk. While Poston and Cecere each added in a hit.
Madison Pettigrew took the win for the Hawks while Ireland Cavanaugh took the loss.
Game 2
The Mountain Lions came out ready for revenge by starting the second game off with a single by Carly Rigsbee to score Jill Torres and take their first lead of the day, 1-0. The Hawks bats fell flat while pitcher Samantha Davis kept the Hawks hitless into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Mountain Lions had a déjà vu moment in the top of the third when Rigsbee hit another single to score Torres, 2-0. In the top of the seventh the Mountain Lions struck again with a sacrifice fly from Haylie Shope to score Karah Straub and widen the lead 3-0. Rigsbee came up and singled to score Natalie Corbin.
The Hawks headed into the bottom of the seventh with Young Harris up 4-0. Shorter hacked away at the plate with Dudley sparking the fire with a single to left field followed by a triple to right center from Cecere which scored Dudley. To keep the rally going Morales singled to shortstop to score Cecere, 4-2. Then Poston hit a single to centerfield but took second base when the centerfielder botched the ball which advanced Morales to third. The Mountain Lions tried to stop the Hawks hitting streak with a pitching change but Graham stepped in the box and ripped a double to center field to score both Poston and Morales and tied the game up 4-4. Young Harris got out of the inning with a caught stealing from catcher to third base.
Heading into the eighth inning the international tie breaker rule became into effect so Young Harris started out with Autuori on second base. Shea Bayreuther did her job and out a sacrifice bunt down to advance Autuori to third. The Hawks kept a tight defense and ended the top of the eighth, 4-4. The Hawks knew it was there time to shine through with Graham on second base and
Kaylee Combs started off with a single to left field with advanced Graham to third. The Mountain Lions made another pitching change to distract the Hawks. But the Hawks were focused in with Phillips drawing a walk and then George came in clutch with the walk off single to right field to score Graham.
Poston was on fire at the plate recording a 3-4 performance while Graham and Combs each went 2-4. Morales, George, Dudley and Cecere all added in one hit.
Julie Sanderlin gained her first win of the season in the circle for the Hawks while Sara King got the loss.
Shorter will head to Columbus State for a doubleheader on Saturday, February 27 with games slated for 1p.m and 3p.m.
