ROME -- The Lady Hawks split the Saturday doubleheader with Lee to open the final weekend of the season. Falling in the opener 3-1, before coming back for a walk-off, 5-4, win in the finale in 10 innings.
Shorter moves to 17-25 on the season and 12-19 in the GSC; while the Flames moves to 26-27 overall, and 14-18 in conference play.
GAME 1: LU 3, SU 1
The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Lee posted two runs to take a 2-0 lead, before a solo homerun in the top of the seventh made it a 3-0 game.
The Lady Hawks then broke through for a run in the bottom of the seventh, on an RBI single from
Taylor Ann Oda for the 3-1 final score.
Payton Lippert took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits with five walks and six strikeouts through a complete game performance.
Six different players finished with a hit sin the game.
GAME 2: LU 8, SU 4
The Lady Hawks scored first in game two; taking a 1-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly from
Carson Carriker to bring in
Maddie Hunt. Only to have the Flames take the lead in the next inning on a two-run homer from Claudia Jones.
From there the teams traded runs, with the Lady Hawks tying the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from
Abi Valdes. In the eight, both teams scored a run, with
Tiffany Holland delivering a single up the middle to bring in
Ashley Langel for the 3-3 score.
With the game moving to the tenth inning, a runner was place in second to begin the frame. Lee scored on a single from Jones to take a 4-3 lead. Before the Lady Hawks came back in the bottom of the inning on consecutive singles from Hunt and Holland. Carriker then walked with the bases loaded to tie the game, 4-4, and
Kaylee Combs delivered the winner – with a shot to straightaway center that would have been a homerun anywhere else – to bring in Hunt for the 5-4 win.
Hannah Draper earned the win, allowing four runs – three earned – on nine hits with four walks and six strikeouts.
Hunt and Holland each finished with three hits; while Combs and
Taylor Martin added two apiece.

The Lady Hawks will look for the series win Sunday afternoon in the final game of the year. Game time is set for 12:00pm.
