Softball tops Montevallo in series finale

ROME -- The Lady Hawks topped Montevallo, 4-3, Saturday morning from Alto Park.

With the win, Shorter moves to 16-20 on the season and 11-15 in the GSC; while the Falcons move to 25-12 overall and 15-11 in conference play.

Montevallo jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first; only to have the Lady Hawks come back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead on Kaylee Combs' second homerun of the weekend – a two run shot to left center that brought in the Maddie Hunt.

The Falcons rallied in the fourth to take the lead, 3-2, with a pair of runs. Before Shorter answered in the fifth with two to regain the advantage, 4-3. The first run of the inning came in on a sacrifice fly from Combs, then Carson Carriker added an RBI single through the right side for the 4-3 score.

Payton Lippert earned the win, pitching the final four innings; allowing two runs – both unearned – on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Hannah Draper made the start, allowing one run on six hits through three innings.

Hunt finished with two hits; while Combs added a hit and three RBI.

The Lady Hawks will back in action next weekend as they travel to Valdosta for the final road series of the season. Saturday's doubleheader is set for a 1:00pm start from Steel's Diamond and Blazer Park.
