Softball sweeps doubleheader at Union

Jackson, Tenn. -- The Lady Hawks swept Union to take the Gulf South Conference series from the Lady Bulldogs; winning the opener 7-2, before taking the finale 4-3.

With the wins, Shorter moves to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference; while Union slips to 4-8 on the season and 1-4 in the GSC.

GAME 1: SU 7, UU 2
The Lady Hawks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the opener, as Tiffany Holland scored on an error and Taylor Martin came in on a fielder's choice in the first inning. Only to have the Lady Bulldogs answer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

From there, it was all Shorter as they added five unanswered runs for the 7-2 final score. In the third, Carson Carriker got the scoring started when she came in on a ground out from Dani Lukas after reaching base on a double down the left field line. Lindsey Newell followed with a RBI double to bring in Martin and Payton Lippert – in her first collegiate at-bat – tallied an RBI single to bring in Newell for the 5-2 score. Martin added an RBI single in the fourth to make it a 6-2 game, before Carriker delivered an RBI single in the sixth for the 7-2 score.

Lippert earned the win, pitching the final six innings; allowing no runs on two hits with six strikeouts. While, Hannah Draper made the start, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks in one inning.

Martin finished the day 3-3 at the plate with an RBI; while, Carriker and Lippert each tallied two hits with one RBI apiece.

GAME 2: SU 4, UU 3
Shorter opened the scoring in the finale, with two runs in the first inning as Martin delivered an RBI triple to bring in Holland, before coming on a fielder's choice from Newell. And, added to it in the second on an unearned run from Taylor Ann Oda, for the 3-0 score. The Lady Hawks then extended their lead to 4-0 on an RBI single from Carriker in the fourth.

Union rallied in the sixth to cut into the lead, with a run; before tacking on two in their last at-bat for the 4-3 final score.

Julie Sanderlin earned the win, her third of the year, on a complete game performance. Over seven innings she allowed three runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Holland finished the game 3-4 at the plate, while Carriker added two more hits in game two – to finish with four on the afternoon.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action next weekend as they host Mississippi College in Gulf South Conference play and the home opener for 2018 from Alto Park.
