Cleveland, Miss. --Â The Lady Hawks earned the doubleheader split with Delta State Saturday afternoon, taking the opener 9-0, before falling in the finale 4-1.
Shorter moves to 22-19 on the season and 11-12 in conference play; while the Lady Statesmen go to 16-20 overall and 9-14 in the GSC.
The game served as Breast Cancer Awareness Day across much of Division II as teams came together to show support for UIndy head coach, Melissa Frost, who was diagnosed with breast cancer and began treatments just days prior to the start of the season.
Game one was all Shorter as the Lady Hawks earned the shutout win over Delta State in six innings.
Ericka Bynum got things started in the first with a 2-RBI double to center field to plate
Tiffany Holland and
Maddie Hunt. In the second, the Lady Hawks added to it with two more runs for the 4-0 score as Holland delivered an RBI single through the left side, and Bynum followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in
Carson Carriker.
Shorter tacked on a run in each the third, fifth, and sixth innings on RBI ground out to bring their advantage to 7-0, before earning the win on a 2-run homer from Bynum for the 9-0 score.
Payton Lippert earned the win, her ninth of the season, holding the Lady Statesmen scoreless on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts over six innings.
Shorter scored first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the second when
Kameron Carter scored when
Taylor Martin hit into a fielder's choice.
But, from there it was all Delta State as they tacked on four unanswered runs to earned the 4-1 win.
Hannah Draper took the loss, alloing four runs – two earned – on five hits three walks and a strikeout through five innings of work.
Kalei Clark pitched the final inning, keeping the Lady Statesmen scoreless on a hit with a strikeout.
Bynum led the Lady Hawks, going 3-6 at the plate with a homerun, a double and five RBI.
