ROME --Â The Lady Hawks earned the sweep of Florida Tech Wednesday afternoon, winning the opener 6-5 and taking the finale 7-0.
Shorter improves to 17-8 on the season; while the Panthers slip to 11-14 overall.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to a big lead; scoring four in the first inning.
Tiffany Holland scored the game's first run, coming in on an error by the left fielder on a single from
Ericka Bynum. Before,
Peyton Barthel brought in in
Maddie Hunt on a ground out, and
Taylor Martin added an RBI single through the left side to bring in Bynum.
Hailey Baswell then made it a 4-0 game on an RBI double to left center.
Shorter added to the lead in the third with
Dani Lukas' second homerun of the year.
Florida Tech answered with a 2-run homer in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2, before
Kameron Carter doubled for Shorter in the bottom of the inning, plating Bynum, to make it a 6-2 game.
The Panthers added a homerun in the fifth, and scored twice in the seventh for the 6-5 final score.
Payton Lippert earned the win, to move to 6-3 on the season; allowing five runs on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. While,
Kalei Clark turned in her first save of the year; collecting the final out of the seventh.
In the game two, the Lady Hawks again took an early lead; scoring three in the bottom of the first as each of the first five batters reached safely. Bynum delivered a 2-RBI double to bring in Holland and Hunt, after both singled up the middle and stole a base.
Hannah Draper added the third run of the inning, bringing in Bynum on a sacrifice fly to left.
In the second, Shorter tacked on two more to extend their lead to five, as Bynum again brought in both Holland and Hunt on a double. And, added a run in both the fifth and sixth for the 7-0 final score.
Draper earned the win for Shorter, her sixth of the year; allowing no runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Bynum finished the day 6-7 at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored; while three of her hits went for extra bases – two doubles and a homerun. Hunt, Holland and Lukas each added three hits for the afternoon with Lukas going 3-3 in game one.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action Saturday and Sunday when No. 5 Valdosta State visits Alto Park for a three game, Gulf South Conference series. Games each day will begin at 1:00pm.
