Lady Hawks fall to UAH

Huntsville, Ala. -- Alabama Huntsville handed the Lady Hawks their fifth straight loss Friday afternoon, sweeping the series opening doubleheader. The Chargers took the opener 5-2, before winning the finale 4-0.

Shorter moves to 21-14 overall and 10-7 in the GSC; while UAH improves to 22-9 on the season and 12-5 in the conference play.

The teams entered the weekend tied for second in the GSC standings. With the losses, the Lady Hawks slip in the standings to a tie for fifth with Lee; who split the day's doubleheader with No. 5 Valdosta State; while UAH maintains control of the second spot.

The Chargers scored first in the game one, taking a 1-0 lead on and RBI single from Tyler Harrison. Only to have Shorter answer in the second for two runs of take the lead. The Lady Hawks' first run of the game came as Dani Lukas came in on a ground out from Taylor Martin, before Carson Carriker brought in Savannah Thomas when she reached on a fielder's choice.

UAH tied the game in bottom of the inning on a solo homerun from Taylor Wascavage, and tacked on three in the third for the 5-2 score.

Payton Lippert took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits with a walk through two innings of work. Kalei Clark pitched the final four innings, holding the Chargers scoreless on one hit.

Thomas accounted for two of the Lady Hawks four hits in the game, tallying a double and a single.

Game two was all UAH, despite Shorter outhitting the Chargers 7-5. UAH took the lead in third when Brooke Miller scored on an error. The run proved to be enough as the Chargers held the Lady Hawks scoreless, but UAH tacked on a run in the fifth on a Sarah Jordan RBI single and in the seventh on a two-run homer from Kaitlyn Bannister for the 4-0 score.

Hannah Draper took the loss, allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Clark came in for the final two outs, collecting one strikeout.

Martin finished 3-3 at the plate in the game.

The Lady Hawks will look to get back into the win column Saturday in the series finale; game time is set for 12:00pm ET from Charger Park in Huntsville, Ala.
