Softball sweeps final day at the Southern Softball Showdown

Columbus, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks finished the weekend 3-1 after sweeping the second day of the Southern Softball Showdown, topping Lynn 6-4 and Columbus State 7-2.

Shorter scored first in game one as Peyton Barthel brought in her first run of the day on an RBI single to left field. Only to have the Fighting Knights answer in the third for four runs to take the lead.

The Lady Hawks rallied in the third to regain the lead, scoring four times to take a 5-4 advantage. First, as Ericka Bynum delivered a two RBI double to right center, plating Hailey Baswell and Carson Carriker. Before scoring one batter later as Kameron Carter reached on an error. Barthel then added her second RBI of the morning, bringing in Carter on a single.

And in the fourth, Tiffany Holland drove in her first run of the year on an RBI single to make it a 6-4 game. Lynn threatened in both the fifth and sixth, stranding runners, but in each failed to score as the Lady Hawks held on for the win.

Kalei Clark earned her first win of the season, pitching 4.1 inning in relief of Payton Lippert; allowing no runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

In game two, Columbus State took an early 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the opening frame, but that would be the only offense they'd get for the remainder of the game as the Lady Hawks held them scoreless through the remainder of the game.

Shorter cut the lead to 2-1 in the third on an RBI triple from Maddie Hunt, before taking the lead in the fourth on a bases-clearing double from Hailey Baswell. Barthell chipped in with two RBIs in the fifth on a single to right field to make it a 6-2 game, before Dani Lukas drove in the game's final run on an RBI single to left for the 7-2 final score.

Hannah Draper earned the win, her first of the year, on a complete game performance. Through seven innings of work, she allowed two runs – one earned on nine hits with three strikeouts.

Barthel finished the day 4-6 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored.

The Lady Hawks return to action Saturday, February 11, as they begin play at the Falcon Frenzy Tournament hosted by the University of Montevallo. Shorter opens the weekend against Miles at 2:30pm EST Saturday, before taking on Ursuline at 7:00pm EST. Sunday will feature a rematch from the 2015 DII WCWS against No. 16 Indianapolis at 4:45pm EST, before closing out the weekend against Mobile at 7:00pm EST.
