Lady Hawks earn split with No. 24 North Alabama

Florence, Ala. -- Softball split the Gulf South Conference doubleheader with No. 24 and reigning NCAA DII National Champion, North Alabama, Saturday afternoon. The Lions took the opener, 5-4, while the Lady Hawks took the finale 10-0 in five innings.

In the opener, UNA took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, only to have the Lady Hawks answer in the fifth with three runs to move ahead 3-1 on RBI singles from Tiffany Holland and Ericka Bynum; while Carson Carriker came in on an error from first baseman.

The Lions countered in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 5-3, before Shorter tallied a final run in the sixth for the 5-4 final score. The Lady Hawks run came as Ashley Langel scored on a sacrifice fly from Hailey Baswell.

Kalei Clark took the loss, her first of the year, allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work. Payton Lippert made the start, allowing four runs on five hits with a strikeout and four walks through 4.1 innings.

In game two, the Lady Hawks got the scoring started in the first as Holland came in on an error and Peyton Barthel delivered an RBI single; before adding two more in the third on a 2-run homer from Bynum – her fourth of the year – to make it a 4-0 game.

Shorter broke through in fourth for six runs to put the game away. Carson Carriker delivered a 2-run double to make it a 6-0 game, before Holland scored on an error, and Kameron Carter delivered her fifth homerun of the year – a three-run shot to right center for the 10-0 score.

The Lady Hawks held the Lions to the minimum in their final two at-bats to earn the win in five, while holding UNA to just two hits in the contest.

Hannah Draper earned the win, to move to 4-2 on the season; turning in five shutout innings with two hits.

Carriker finished the day with three hits; while Holland, Bynum and Martin finished the day with two.
