Valdosta, Ga. -- The 2016 season came to an end Friday afternoon for the Shorter softball team as the Hawks fell to West Florida 3-1 in the first elimination game of the South 2 Regional.
Shorter got on the board first, scoring one run in the third as
Niki Cook came in on an RBI single from
Kameron Carter after reaching base on a walk. The score stood, despite chances, until the top of the seventh when the Argos struck from three runs on four hits to upend the Hawks for the third time during the postseason.
In total Shorter was held to just three hits on the afternoon; while West Florida tallied ten in the game. Carter, Cook and
Tiffany Holland each tallied a hit for the Hawks.
Payton Lippert pitched out of trouble in nearly every inning, holding the Argos scoreless through the sixth. The game's tying run in the seventh was charged to her as Meghan Toney reached on a single before she was replaced by
Kalei Kimbrell to close out the game. Lippert finished with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing one run on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. While Kimbrell turned in .2 innings of work, allowing two runs on three hits and taking the loss.
The Hawks finished 30-22 on the season with a 20-13 conference mark, while the Argos posted an overall record of 42-17 (23-10 GSC) after topping Valdosta, 6-2, to reach the Regional Finals where they fell to Rollins, 2-0.
