Softball sweeps doubleheader at UWA

Livingston, Ala. -- The Hawks tallied a new season high in hits for a game as they used 20 hits to top West Alabama 9-1 in game one Saturday afternoon, before turning in doubleheader sweep with a 12-3 win in game two.

Shorter improves to 26-14 on the season and 17-12 in Gulf South Conference play; while the Tigers go to 16-29 overall and 6-23 in the conference.

Shorter got things going in the first inning of game one as Niki Cook scored on a double from Kameron Carter, after reaching base on a hit to lead off the game. The lead didn't last as West Alabama answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning when Libby Davis came in on an error from Cook.

The Hawks regained the lead in the third on an RBI single from Taylor Ann Oda, and added to it with two in the fifth for the 4-1 score. First as Peyton Barthel came in on an RBI ground out from Carson Carriker, and as Oda scored on a single from Tiffany Holland.

Barthel added an RBI single in the sixth to make it a 5-1 game, before coming in on a ground out from Oda. Shorter tacked on three final runs in the seventh for the 9-1 score as Holland scored on a RBI double from Cook; who then came in, along with Kendall Johnson, on a double from Carter.

Payton Lippert earned the win, her 14th of the year, pitching the complete game; during which she allowed one run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Every hitter for the Hawks recorded a hit with seven of the nine turning in two or more. Cook finished the game 4-5 at the plate, while Barthel and Holland added three hits apiece.

In game two, Shorter jumped out early tallying ten runs on five hits in the first inning. Cook and Johnson led off the inning by reaching on errors, before Carter made it a 2-0 game when she brought in Johnson on an RBI single – Cook scored on the previous error. Ericka Bynum then reached on an error to put runners at first and third with no outs. Barthel then delivered an RBI single to bring in Carter, and Oda followed with  sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position for Dani Lukas; who tallied a 2 RBI single to make it a 5-0 game. Carriker then walked and Holland delivered a sacrifice bunt to move Lukas and Carriker into scoring position. Batting all the way through the order, Cook came up with two on and two out; drawing a walk to load the bases, and then all three scored on a bases clearing double from Johnson; who then scored on Carter's 11th homerun of the season for the 10-0 score.

The Hawks added a run in the third on a single from Johnson, before the Tigers posted two runs in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run homer from Kristin Bittle. West Alabama added a final run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, and Shorter tallied a final run in the fifth as Maddie Hunt came in on an error by the second baseman.

Hannah Draper earned the win, turning in five innings of work, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with four walks.

Both Carter and Johnson finished the game with two hits each.
