Davenport, Fla. -- Shorter Women's Lacrosse fell to Slippery Rock, 23-10, to begin its spring break swing through Florida.
The Lady Hawks slip to 1-6 on the season; while the Rock earns its first win of the season.
Slippery Rock took a quick 2-0 lead in the first ten minutes of the half, but Shorter answered at the 20:00 mark to cut into the lead and make it a 3-1 game as
Kari Chambers tallied her first goals of the contest. From there the Rock went on a 7-0 run to bring their advantage to 10-1 before
Crystal Marshall added a second goal for Shorter with 8:02 to play. Through the final minutes, the Lady Hawks added two additional goals – from Chambers and Marshall – while Slippery Rock posted three to take a 13-4 game into the break.
Over the first ten minutes of the second half the teams traded goals to make it a 17-8 game a third of the way through the half. Shorter's four goals came from
Tiffany Kongpachith, Marshall,
McKinley Puckett, and
Ashley Nuqui. Before Slippery Rock added a 3-0 run to extend their advantage to 20-8 with 12:55 to play. Marshall broke the scoreless streak for Shorter with 9:30 to go, netting her fourth goal of the game and 27
th of the season, minutes later Nuqui chipped in with a second goal for the game to close out the scoring for the Lady Hawks. While, the Rock added three final goals before time ran out for the 23-10 final score.
In total Slippery Rock outshot Shorter 40-18, and held a 26-15 advantage in shots on goal. While also leading in groundballs 21-13 and in draw controls 22-11.
Shorter goalie, Catherine MItchner, tallied 13 saves through 54 minutes of play. In addition to two goals and an assist on the day, Chambers led with three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Marshall added four goals, to go along with three draw wins, two groundballs, and a caused turnover.
The Lady Hawks will be back in action Wednesday evening at Florida Southern. Game time is set for 7:00pm EST.
