ROME -- The Hawks split the non-conference doubleheader with Young Harris Wednesday afternoon; falling in the opener 2-1, and winning the finale, 4-3 in extra innings.
Shorter moves to 15-10 on the season; while the Mountain Lions go to 18-8 overall.
Kendall Johnson put the Hawks on the board in the first inning of game one as she came in to score on an RBI single from
Kameron Carter. Only to have Young Harris take the lead, 2-1, in the top of the second on RBI hits from Chandler Stooksbury and Rachel Benson.
The score stood despite Shorter having chances in each inning to do some damage, but they weren't able to push the run across and stranded runners in scoring position each time.
Payton Lippert took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
In game two the Mountain Lions jumped ahead, 2-0, in the first on a 2 RBI single from Muphy Davis. Shorter struck for the three in the sixth to take the lead, 3-2 as
Sierra Cagle scored on an error by the third baseman after reaching base on a walk, moving to second on a single from
Taylor Martin, and advancing to third on a fielder's choice by
Maddie Hunt. Martin and Hunt then came in to score on a 2 RBI single from
Tiffany Holland one batter later.
Down to their last at bat, Young Harris tied the game. Jeannie Perrucci led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on the error by
Hannah Draper, before advancing to third when Lindsey Tudor was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and then came in on a walk to Grace Botti. Shorter was sat down in order in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extra innings.
The game remained tied until the tenth when the tiebreaker rule was put into place. Botti was placed at second to start the inning, and moved to third on a sacrifice hit by Stooksbury, but was stranded as
Kalei Kimbrell struck out the next two batters to send the game to the bottom of the tenth. For Shorter,
Savannah Thomas began the inning at second base, and moved to third on a sacrifice from
Carson Carriker. She then scored the winning run for the Hawks as pinch hitter,
Taylor Ann Oda, singled to centerfield to end the game.
Kimbrell recorded the win, her third of the season; pitching 2.2 innings of relief, allowing no runs on one hits with three strikeouts.
Niki Cook, Carter, Johnson and Oda each finished with two hits on the day for the Hawks.
Shorter will return to action Saturday afternoon for a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with longtime rival, Lee University, at Alto Park. Game times are set for 1 & 3.
