Hawks top Florida Southern on the final day at the Eckerd Invite

Clearwater, Fla. -- The Hawks closed out the Eckerd Invitational on a high note, topping Florida Southern 3-2 Sunday morning.

Shorter improves to 3-1 on the season; while the Mocs move to 0-1 after both of their games were cancelled on Saturday.

After stranding runners in both the second and fourth innings, the Hawks finally broke through in the fifth; scoring three runs – all with two outs. Carson Carriker tallied her second hit of the day to get things going, and was followed with a single from Maddie Hunt and a walk to Niki Cook to load the bases. Kendall Johnson then delivered an RBI double to plate all three and give Shorter the lead 3-0.

The score stood until the sixth, when Florida Southern tacked on two runs of their own on back-to-back RBI hits from Sydney Koch and Katie Patterson for the 3-2 final score.

Carriker went 2-3 on the day with a strikeout and run scored; while Johnson's lone hit proved to be the game winner, plating three.

Payton Lippert moves to 1-1 on the year with the win, pitching the complete game. Through seven innings of work she allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

Shorter will return to action Saturday, February 13, as they open Gulf South Conference player against Christian Brothers University at Alto Park. Game times for the double-header are set for 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
