ROME -- The Hawks closed out the sweep of Christian Brothers Sunday afternoon; topping the Bucs 8-0 in five innings.
Shorter (6-1, 3-0 GSC) opened the scoring in the first inning, scoring twice.
Niki Cook led off with a walk, then stole second, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Tiffany Holland; before coming in on a triple off the top of the fence in right field by
Kendall Johnson.
Ericka Bynum then brought in Johnson two batters later on a fly out to right field.
The Hawks added to their lead in the third, with three runs as
Becca Gomez and
Maddie Hunt scored on a single from Cook; who came in later in the inning on a single from Holland.
Christian Brothers (3-8, 0-3 GSC) threatened in the fourth loading the bases with no outs, but the next three batters were retired in order to preserve the shutout. In the bottom of the inning Shorter tacked on another run when Hunt crossed the plate on a single from Holland.
In the fifth, up 6-0, the Hawks push two final runs across to earn the win.
Kameron Carter singled to lead off the inning, and came in to score on a single from Gomez; who then scored as CBU's second baseman dropped a pop fly that would have been the third out.
Kalei Kimbrel earned her first win of the year, in her first start of the season after having entered in relief in each of her other two appearances. Through the complete game, shot out performance, she allowed four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Holland and Hunt each posted two hits on the day for Shorter.
The Hawks will return to action Saturday and Sunday, February 20-21, as they welcome Union University to Alto Park for a three game series. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1:00pm.
