Valdosta, Ga. -- The Lady Hawks' luck at Steel's Diamond continued Friday afternoon as they topped Alabama Huntsville, 3-1, in 11 innings.
Shorter scored first, in the fourth inning, as
Kendall Johnson came in on a throwing error by the first baseman after reaching base on a bunt single and advancing to second on a stolen base. The Chargers answered in the sixth to tie the game on a solo homerun to left field by Kaitlin Bannister.
Through the next five innings each team looked to rally, with both having chances, but neither being able to break through. The Lady Hawks did just that, however, with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning as
Kameron Carter reached on an error to set up the heroics from
Paige Rowland, who crushed a homerun to left center to give Shorter the walk-off win.
Kalei Kimbrell recorded the win after providing 5.2 innings of relief work on the day; allowing no runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Maddie Bray made the start, going 3.1 innings, allowing no runs on four hits with two strikeouts. And,
Amanda Blanchard added 2.0 innings on the day, allowing the lone Charger run on four hits with one strikeout.
Alabama Huntsville starter, Tyler Harrison, pitched the complete game; scattering eight hits through 10.2 innings with two strikeouts.
Niki Cook and
Carson Carriker each finished with two hits on the day. While, four other Hawks added one hit each.
Shorter will take on top-seeded Valdosta State Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm for a spot in the South Region I championship game.
