OKLAHOMA CITY – In a postseason marked by outstanding team play from the Shorter University softball squad, it was fitting that the season's biggest win to date followed suit.
Shorter sent all nine members of its lineup to the plate during a five-run fourth inning and earned a 5-0 shutout of No. 10 Indianapolis in the winner's bracket of the 2015 NCAA Division II Women's College World Series on Friday evening.
The win sends the 24th-ranked Lady Hawks (43-15) into Sunday's winner's bracket action, where Shorter will need one win to advance to Monday's national championship contest. Indianapolis (48-14) drops into Saturday's elimination round and will play the winner of tomorrow's elimination game between California (Penn.) and Central Missouri.
Shorter remained unblemished in the WCWS after another tremendous offensive effort bolstered by strong pitching and solid defense.
Indianapolis ace Morgan Foley, a three-time All-American that no-hit No. 6 North Georgia in yesterday's 1-0 win, lasted just 3.1 innings against the Lady Hawks. Shorter threatened in each of the first three innings, advancing a runner to second base in each frame, but finally broke through in the fourth when it sent 10 players to the batter's box.
The fourth began with back-to-back singles from
Carson Carriker and
Hannah Draper. Shorter loaded the bases with no outs when Foley fielded
Tori Etheridge's bunt and was late trying to nab Carriker at third.
Niki Cook drew a bases loaded walk to push across the game's first run before
Maggie Meacham, Thursday's hero, put Shorter up 3-0 with a two-run single that plated Draper and Etheridge. Two batters later,
Ericka Bynum knocked Foley out of the game with a two-run single of her own to make it 5-0.
The home half of the fourth didn't end until Carriker grounded out in her second at-bat of the frame.
Shorter's pitching duo of
Maddie Bray and
Amanda Blanchard matched wits with Foley, combining to shut out the Greyhounds.
Bray tossed the first 2.1 innings before being lifted for Blanchard after running into trouble in the third. Blanchard entered the game with two on and one out, but retired Indy All-Americans Casey Williamson and Taylor Russell via strikeout and ground out, respectively, to end the threat.
Blanchard saw two Greyhounds reach in the fifth as Indianapolis tried to answer, but Carriker quelled the momentum – and Indy's last hope – with a fantastic individual defensive effort.
With runners at the corners and one out, Katie Kelly took off for second inducing a throw from Shorter catcher
Paige Rowland that glanced off the glove of shortstop
Kendall Johnson. Carriker scooped up the loose ball, looked Indy's Jenny Thompson back to third, and chased Kelly back to first, eventually tagging her out for the second out of the inning.
Sydney Russell grounded out several pitches later and the shutout remained intact.
Bray struck out a pair while facing 11 batters. Blanchard earned her 20th win in 4.2 innings of relief, scattering three hits and fanning three.   Â
Shorter, which has a tournament-high 19 hits through two games, kept its bats hot against Foley. After striking out 10 Nighthawks in the opener, the Division II strikeout leader managed just three strikeouts against four walks on Friday against a patient and opportunistic Shorter lineup.
Meacham had a particularly good day, going 3-for-4 with the two RBI and two stolen bases. Meacham and Bynum lead the Lady Hawks with four RBI apiece so far in the WCWS.
Shorter will take Saturday off before returning to ASA Hall of Fame Stadium on Sunday at 1 pm ET. Stay tuned to goshorterhawks.com for updates.
