Valdosta, Ga. --Â The season continues! The Lady Hawks defeated No. 2 Valdosta State 6-1 Sunday afternoon to claim the NCAA South I Region title and a spot in the South Super Regional this coming weekend; where they will host Florida Tech in a best of three series at Alto Park.
Shorter (38-15) got off to a quick start as
Niki Cook scored in the first inning on a ground out by
Kendall Johnson after reaching base on single to left center. The Blazers (48-9) answered in the next inning for their only run of the game on a single from Kelly Gordon to plate Brandy Morgan.
Only to have the Lady Hawks regain the lead and ultimately the win in the third inning as they rallied for three runs – all with two outs.
Tori Etheridge singled to start things off, and came in to score on a single up the middle from
Maggie Meacham. Johnson followed with an RBI double to bring in Meacham, and then came in for the inning's final run on a single from
Ericka Bynum.
Bynum gave Shorter some insurance in the fifth with a two run homer to left field for the 6-1 final score.
In the win the Lady Hawks held Valdosta State to three hits, while turning in eight of their own with Meacham and Bynum chipping in with two apiece.
