Cleveland, Miss. -- After splitting the doubleheader Sunday afternoon, Delta State earned the series win over the Lady Hawks with a 3-1 win on Monday afternoon.
Shorter (28-12, 18-11) fell in the opener 5-2 on Sunday before coming back in the finale to win 9-1 in six innings.
Maggie Meacham got things going in the first inning as she brought in
Niki Cook on an RBI single, and came in to score on a single from
Kameron Carter.
Ericka Bynum made it a 3-0 game later in the inning as she grounded out to the shortstop, plating
Kendall Johnson. In the third, Bynum extended the Lady Hawks lead to 5-0 with her second homerun of the season, bringing in
Paige Rowland.
Delta State's lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout from Amber Adcock. Shorter went on to add a run in the fourth on a single from Carter, and in the fifth made it a 7-1 game on as
Janell Echols scored on an error. Then Bynum and
Carson Carriker delivered RBI hits in the sixth for the 9-1 final score.
Amanda Blanchard earned the win, allowing one run on eight hits with seven strikeouts.
Bynum finished the game 2-4 at the plate with 4RBI and 2 runs scored.
Monday, Delta State earned the series win, topping the Lady Hawks 3-1. The Lady Statesmen got on the board in the first as Taylor Holland scored on a bases loaded walk. Shorter tied the game in the fourth when Johnson scored on a throwing error. Delta State regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, and added a run in the fifth for the 3-1 final score.
Maddie Bray took the loss for Shorter; allowing one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work.
Johnson finished the day 2-3 at the plate with a run scored.
The Lady Hawks will return to action Wednesday, April 22, as they travel to Young Harris College for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
