Clinton, Miss. -- The Lady Hawks split the doubleheader with Gulf South Conference newcomer, Mississippi College, Saturday afternoon; falling in the opener 3-2, before taking the finale 5-1.
Shorter moves to 21-9 on the season and 11-8 in the GSC; while the Lady Choctaws go to 18-11 overall and 11-8 in conference play.
MC got all the offense it would need in the fifth inning as Megan Everett singled to right field to bring in three runs.
Carson Carriker broke the shutout; however, with an RBI single in the sixth to plate
Janell Echols and
Paige Rowland homered in the seventh for the 3-2 final score.
Maddie Bray took the loss for Shorter; allowing three runs on seven hits with three walk and a strikeout through a complete game, six inning performance.
The second game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when
Abi Valdes delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to plate
Tori Etheridge. Tori Bankston homered in the bottom of the inning to tie the game; only to have the Lady Hawks use a four run sixth inning to earn the win.
Kameron Carter got things started with an RBI single to bring in
Maggie Meacham. Rowland added a single later in the inning; platting Carter and
Kendall Johnson. Niki cook then drew a bases loaded walk to bring in
Ericka Bynum for the 5-1 final score.
Amanda Blanchard moved to 11-1 on the year with a complete game performance. Through seven innings she allowed one run on seven hits with four strikeouts.
Rowland finished the day with four hits, including a homerun, and three RBI.
Shorter will look to take the series Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm eastern.
