Lady Hawks fall to Catawba in season opener

ROME -- The Lady Hawks came up just short Saturday afternoon falling to Catawba College 14-13 in overtime to open the 2015 season.

It was a back and forth game that saw a tied score seven times and the lead change eight times.

The Indians scored first as Caroline Beggs found the back of the net at the 27:49 mark, only to see Shorter tie the game six minutes later on Kari Chambers' first of four goals on the day. Catawba answered to regain the lead, and the Lady Hawks followed suit taking the lead 3-2 on back to back goals from Ashley Nuqui and Crystal Marshall.

The Indians then scored three consecutive goals to take a 5-3 advantage with 13:39 to play. Over the final thirteen minutes, Chambers netted three goals and Marshall added her second; while holding Catawba to one to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.

The second period opened with three goals from the Indians, but Shorter answered with five goals of their own, capped off by Shelby Beverly's second of the game with 12:40 to play to give the Lady Hawks a 12-9 advantage. Catabwa followed with four goals to regain the lead 13-12, before Devin Spero netted her first goal of the season with 1:03 to play to tie things up and send the game to overtime.

The first overtime period came and went with neither team scoring, the Indians then broke the stalemate with 00:27 to play in the final overtime period to earn the win 14-13.

Nicole Kube played the complete game in goal for Shorter making 8 saves.

Chambers led the offense for the Lady Hawks; tallying a career high 4 goals in the game; while Marshall chipped in with 3, and Beverly with 2. Spero, Erin Wynn, Mia Wiggins and Nuqui each added one goal for Shorter.

The Lady Hawks held the advantage 30-26 in shots on the game, and 23-22 in shots on goal. While also holding the advantage 25-21 in ground balls, while Catawba won 15 draws and Shorter won 14.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action Saturday, February 21, as they travel to Due West, S.C. to take on Erskine College.
