Wrestling Hawks win first Mid-South dual, top WVU Tech 35-12
MONTGOMERY, W.Va. - With a successful outing in
its first-ever home dual meet one week ago in the books, the firsts
continued to roll in the for the Shorter University wrestling
squad.
Shorter made its first dent in the Mid-South Conference wrestling scene by scoring a victory in its first-ever Mid-South dual meet, toppling West Virginia Tech 35-12 in Montgomery, W.Va., on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks, who dismantled Central Baptist College by 47 in their first-ever dual meet on Nov. 12, recovered from a sluggish start against West Virginia Tech to secure a convincing win.
Shorter got strong performances from Colby Rinehart at 149, Raleigh Abbott at 157 and Josh Cook at 165.
Rinehart was impressive in his match with West Virginia Tech's Cole Cooper, pinning Cooper 1:42 into the match.
Abbott, who saw his first action since returning from a broken hand, defeated WVU Tech's Adam Rutter by technical fall and Cook earned his second fall in a row in dual competition by pinning Josh Vance in 53 seconds.
Shorter's Gunny Hoyt beat Mark Ward 7-5 at 197 and Chris Rowland defeated Tech's Zach Freet 6-2 at 285.
The Hawks return to competition on Dec. 10 when they travel to University of the Cumberlands.
