Wrestling Hawks fall to 10th-ranked Cumberland, 27-10


ROME, Ga. -- Cumberland University (Tenn.), ranked 10th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, defeated Shorter University 27-10 in Mid-South Conference wrestling action on Wednesday afternoon in Rome, Ga.

The Hawks, competing in their first dual meet since a Dec. 14 trip to No. 19 Missouri Baptist, hung tough throughout, dropping three matches by two points or less -- one of which came at 197 pounds when Cumberland's Kyle Frazier scored a takedown of Shorter's Joe Hinchman with one second remaining in the third period for a 3-2 victory.

The Hawks' Colby Rinehart defeated the Bulldogs' Matt Stanfield 13-5 at 141.

Shorter's Raleigh Abbott secured a 7-3 decision over Cumberland's Zeke Hunt at 165 and Gunny Hoyt of the Hawks outlasted Scott Stewart at 184 to account for Shorter's victories.

Jesse Miller wrestled well for the Hawks at 149, coming up just short in a tight 1-0 match with Andy Schoultz of Cumberland.

Alex McGhee also gave a strong effort at 285, falling in a close 4-2 decision to Cumberland's Brad Rogers.

Shorter returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 9 when it travels to Darton College for a dual scheduled for 2 p.m.
