Birmingham, Ala. -- In the Hawks and Lady Hawks first meets back after the holidays, the teams wasted no time in setting the stage for what's to come; while turning in five new school records – four men's and one women's.
Highlighting day one for the Hawks was
Lester Miller's 60m performance; where he earned an automatic qualification to Indoor Nationals in March with the fastest time in Division II this season as he crossed the line in 6.67 seconds, just .01 behind the standing meet record set in 2013. While, also setting a new school record at the distance, besting Kirk Wilson's 2012 mark by .5 – 6.72.
First year member of the Hawks,
Deangelo Harris also notched a school record time over the weekend. Finishing eighth in Friday's 500m race as he crossed the line in 1:05.5; breaking the current record by .2 – set at the same event in 2014 by
Wake Roberds.
Roberds, on the other hand, just missed a new record of his own in the 600m, turning in a time of 1:20.30. The current record was set in 2008 by Remy Charpentier and stands at 1:20.18.
During Saturday's events,
Dejon Devroe clocked 1:53.92 to win the 800m and set a new Shorter best at the distance, besting Eliud N'getich's record from 2010 by .38 of a second. While,
Jonathan Ross posted the first-ever sub-eight second mark in school history in the 60m hurdles when he crossed the line in 7.98 – a time that ranks second best in DII this year.
On the women's side, it was
Anelise Aldana who proved to be the best in the triple jump, turning a new personal best – and the longest jump so far in DII – when she tallied a leap of 12.27m.
While,
Amber Littlejohn's fourth place finish in the 500m bested the existing Shorter record by nearly a full second as she crossed the line in 1:16.60.
Jasmine Crump finished in the top six in two of her races on the weekend. Finishing sixth in the 300m on Friday in a time 39.86 (second fastest time in program history), and turning in a sixth-place finish in the 200m on Saturday in a time of 24.80 (fourth fastest all-time).
The teams will be back in action January 29 when they return to the Crossplex for the KMS Invitational.
